E. Moncell Durden

E. Moncell Durden is a dance educator and historian who specializes in the cultural and historical context of American Afro-Latin social dance. Durden is an assistant professor of practices for the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at University of Southern California and has been a senior lecturer of hip-hop at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He was also part of the adjunct faculty at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Yale School of Drama in Connecticut, and the Eugene Lang New School in New York City. Hip-hop dance is generally a fun and safe activity. However, as with any physical endeavor, injuries sometimes occur. Fortunately, you can prevent many of them by taking appropriate safety precautions and developing your understanding of basic principles of movement, nutrition, and anatomy.

For that purpose, this chapter examines studio safety, including ways to create the best environment to minimize joint and muscle stress and keep the studio free of injury-causing obstacles. It also addresses basic anatomy, proper alignment, and how the human body is designed to move. In addition, because injuries cannot always be avoided, the chapter covers common injuries and simple first aid techniques to speed recovery. Finally, so that you know how to prepare and fuel your body for the strenuous movement required in hip-hop dance, this chapter discusses proper fitness and conditioning, nutrition, hydration, and rest. When you care for your body, you enhance your productivity.

Many dance studios are multipurpose facilities that cater to a variety of dance or exercise classes. Some dance classes are also taught in shared facilities, such as a gymnasium. No matter the type of space you are in, safety is an essential consideration. Your teacher is responsible for the safety of the dance space and can provide you with instructions related to federal, state, and local codes that address various emergency and safety situations. The overall goal should always be to take appropriate safety and health measures; in fact, you should be just as committed to maintaining your health and safety as you are to developing your technique and performance....
